I enjoyed this book immensely. David Hanna's ability to go from a world of wealth and security, to the driven life of a terrorist, to a poor 19th century Polish village beset with religious strife and into the mind of a Russian army officer overseeing this shetel is astounding. The fear of the Russian soldiers by the villagers and the uneasy feelings between the peasants and the orthodox Jews is gripping. Hanna does not place you in the chair of a movie theatre viewing a motion picture. Instead, you find yourself at the side of Herschel Hartenstein, the young man who is initially ill prepared to confront all of these challenges. THE FIRST FEW PAGES WERE A LITTLE SLOW MOVING, BUT THEN IT CARRIES YOU AWAY. HIS RSEARCH OF THIS PERIOD OF HISTORY IN THE 1860'S IN RUSSIAN HELD POLAND , WAS VERY VIVID. THE IRRATIONAL USE OF ANTI SEMITISM AND THEIR RESULTS LED ME TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHY THEY LED TO LATER HORRORS. A GOOD WELL WRITTEN READ.
